Turnout Gear FAQs

Turnout gear, also referred to as “turnouts” or “bunker gear”, is a type of protective clothing worn by firefighters when responding calls.

Tested to NFPA 1971, turnout gear is primarily designed for structural firefighting.

For more information on turnout gear and structural firefighting, visit our knowledgebase.

Unfortunately, this isn’t possible. The NFPA standards state that all three layers are required, which means we cannot sell the outer shell or liner individually.

Yes. Each year, all combinations of our turnouts are tested to make sure they are still in compliance with the current standard.

If a combination does not pass the 2018 edition of the NFPA 1971 standard, we will no longer sell that combination.

We do not have a set “standard” inseam.

Our most common inseam is 30″, but it all depends on the measurement. Inseams are done in 2” increments only — no odd sizing.

The temperature your turnout gear can withstand depends on the materials used in its construction.

Turnout gear is certified to NFPA 1971, which standardizes performance requirements for total heat loss (THL) and thermal protective performance (TPP).

These factors greatly impact the amount of heat turnout gear can withstand.

Turnout gear selection, care, and maintenance is covered under NFPA 1851.

Washing your turnout gear is something that should be done by a professional, such as an Independent Service Provider or Verified Cleaner.

Jared Johnson carrying hose in firefighter challenge
“I chose Lakeland not only because their gear spec is one of the most custom, athletic fit, and mobile options on the market today, but because the standard they set internally to ensure firefighters have the best and safest gear options available is at their highest level of concern.”
